In the case of client data it is subject to the Data Protection Act 1998 and companies holding such data are obliged to ensure its safekeeping and secure disposal. It is imperative therefore that such data is held, transported and disposed of in an appropriately secure and confidential manner.

Destroying IT equipment is unnecessarily wasteful and goes against the EU Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive, which was introduced to minimise the environmental impact of waste electrical and electronic equipment, which ultimately ends up in landfill sites. Furthermore, the destruction of a hard drive prevents a computer from ever being put to positive use again.

Putting into a commercial context, most private sector organisations replace their IT equipment every 3 to 5 years. And when you consider that the majority of these businesses may provide one desktop, one laptop, and at least one USB drive per employee, the poteential for waste is staggering.
